Peerkangai Kootu is one of the best and healthy dal based gravy variety which can be taken as an accompaniment for any type of kara kulambhu, rotis, chapathis or can be mixed with white rice. This kootu is made by blending the dal and ridge gourd with a coconut mixture. Ridge gourd is rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals. It is low in saturated fat and cholesterol and thus aids in weight loss.

Ingredients needed for making Peerkangai Kootu
Peerkangai / Ridge gourd - 1 cup finely chopped
Channa dhal - 1/2cup
Onion (chopped) - 1
Green chilly - 2 nos.
Salt to taste
Oil - 2tsp
To Grind
Grated coconut - 4 tbsp.
Cumin seeds - 1tsp.
green chillies - 1
For the tempering
Mustard seed - 1 tsp.
Urad dhal - 1 tsp.
Red chilly - 1
Asafoetida - a pinch
A sprig of Curry leaves
Method for making Peerkangai Kootu
1. Cook the channa dal with a pinch of turmeric powder in a pressure cooker for 3 whistles.
2. Peel the outer skin of the Ridge gourd and remove the seeds. Now finely chop the ridge gourd and if this is tender you can also include the seeds.
3. Add the chopped onions and Ridge gourd to the cooked dal and cook in a pressure cooker for 1 whistle.
4. Heat oil in a kadai splutter the mustard seeds, fry the urad dal and red chilly, add the curry leaves and now add the cooked peerkangai and dal from the cooker.
5. Mix well and then add the ground mixture. Leave this for a minute till everything gets blended well.
Now the Peerkangai kootu is ready.
