Pattanam Pakoda | Madras Tea Kadai Medhu Pakoda | Tasty crunchy Tea-time snack

 Pattanam Pakoda is one of the popular and evening snack recipe which is prepared in all tea kadai and sweet stalls in Chennai. This is a traditional snack also called as Madras Pakoda. Chennai is formerly known as Madras. My dad gets this Pakoda from a popular shop in Parry's corner. This is one of the tasty crunchy tea-time snack recipe which will be loved by people of all ages.

Madras Tea Kadai Medhu Pakoda


Ingredients for making Pattanam Pakoda

Bengal Gram flour / kadalai maavu - 1/4 cup
Rice flour - 1/4 cup.
Roasted gram flour / Pottukadali Maavu - 1/4 cup
A pinch of cooking soda
Butter / Ghee  - 1tbsp.
Salt as required
A spoon of ghee
Onions finely chopped - 1 cup
Green chilli - 1 no.
Ginger (finely chopped) - 1 tbsp.
A pinch of hing
Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp.
Fennel seeds - 1/2 tsp.
Red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp.
A sprig of Curry leaves
A small bunch of Coriander leaves (finely chopped)
Water as needed
Oil for deep frying

Method for making Pattanam Pakoda


1. Take a wide botommed bowl, mix cooking soda and ghee to make a creamy texture. This step is important as it gives fluffiness to the pakodas.

2. Add, gram flour, rice flour and pottukadalai flour along with salt and mix well to get a crumble like texture.

3. Add the remaining ingredients one by one and mix well red chilli powder, cumin, fennel seeds, chopped onions, green chillies, ginger, curry leaves, coriander leaves and combine everything by adding water little by little.

3. Do not mash or press to knead just mix gently  to get a semi soft consistency.

4. Heat oil in a kadai and drop a ball size of the batter into the oil.

5. Fry this in medium flame till you get a golden brown  colour.

Serve  Pattanam Pakodas with Chutney and any Sweet Recipe.
