Drumstick Peanut Curry | Murungakkai Masala Gravy for Chapathi and White Rice

Drumstick Peanut Curry is a thick aromatic gravy made with peanuts, coconuts and onions mixed with drumsticks. Here the drumsticks are coated well with ground masalas and spices to give a nice aroma and flavor to the curry. Try this Murungakkai masala with white rice, chapathi, idli or dosa.

Murungakkai Masala  Gravy

Ingredients for making  Murungakkai Masala  Gravy

Drumstick - 2 nos.
Chopped Onions - 1 cup
Tomatoes - 2 nos.
Ginger garlic paste - 1 tbsp.
Green Chillies - 1
A sprig of curry leaves
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp.
Fennel seeds - 1 tsp.
A pinch of Turmeric powder
Chilli powder - 1 tsp.
A pinch of garam masala
Salt as required
Oil as required

To Roast and grind

A handful of peanuts
A handful of grated coconut
A handful of fresh coriander leaves

Method for making  Murungakkai Masala  Gravy

1. Heat oil in a pan, roast the groundnuts and then add grated coconut and fry till the coconut changes to golden brown in colour.

2. Next add a handful of coriander leaves and saute well. Now remove this in a bowl. Cool and grind this in a mixer.

3. Add a spoon of oil and fry the drumstick pieces then add a pinch of turmeric powder and add 1 cup of water and allow it to cook for 5 minutes till it becomes soft. Remove this and set aside.

4. Heat oil in a kadai, splutter the mustard seeds, add fennel seeds and bay leaf. Saute well and then add chopped onions, slit green chillies and curry leaves. Saute well till the raw smell disappears.

5. Now add a tablespoon of ginger garlic paste and saute till the raw smell disappears. 

6. Add turmeric powder, chilly powder, garam masala powder and mix well.

7. At this stage add ground tomato puree and saute well for 5 minutes till the oil separates from the sides.

8. Add the ground peanut coconut mixture and mix well. Next add a cup of water and allow this to boil in a low flame for 5 minutes.

9. Next add the cooked drumstick pieces and allow to boil for 2 to 3 minutes in low flame.

Now the Drumstick Peanut Gravy is ready.
